


410 channels uplink from India, 143 waiting
NEW DELHI: Three new private television channels – Krishna TV, Rhythm, and Vedic – have been permitted to uplink from India over the past two months, taking the total number of channels being uplinked to 410.
In addition, 73 private satellite tv channels uplinked from abroad, are permitted to downlink in India. This takes the total number of channels available to viewers in India to 483.
Applications of 143 TV channels are seeking permission to uplink from India. In addition, applications of 20 TV channels, uplinked from abroad, seeking permission to downlink in India are at various stages of scrutiny.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting C M Jatua told Parliament today that no definite time frame can be indicated for clearances. Once the applicant companies provide all required information/documents and clearances from other Ministries, the applications are considered for permission in the minimum time frame.
The three new channels cleared are in the non-news category. Krishna TV channel is being launched by Dr S Krishnaswamy’s Krishnaswamy Associates Media Rennaissance. Krishnaswamy is a renowned author and filmmaker who has made films and TV series like ‘Indus Valley to Indira Gandhi’ and ‘Indian Imprints’.
Rhythm is owned by Vijayanthi Televentures, while Vedic is owned by Vedic Broadcasting.
Ten other channels which have got clearance have either not paid the required fee or want a change in satellite.
The total of 483 television channels includes 233 news and current affairs and 250 non-news channels from within the country and overseas.
